Welcome to my website!

This site summarizes news on my research and teaching activities. If you want to get a quick impression of some of my recent research projects, you can check out these short videos:
  • Peacefully demobilizing rebels: Identities, emotional cues, and the FARC (with Juan P. Aparicio and Chris Parsons; Working Paper available here)
  • Foreshadowing Mars: Religiosity and conflict in pre-Enlightenment Europe (with Luke Barber and Tim Krieger; Working Paper available here; revision requested for the Journal of Economic Growth)
  • Gone with the wind: The consequences of US drone strikes in Pakistan (with Rafat Mahmood; published in The Economic Journal)
  • News coverage and mass shootings in the US (with Jay Walker; published in the European Economic Review)
  • Career Lotto: Labor Supply in a superstar market (with Wayne Grove and Kerry Papps; published in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization)

In terms of teaching, I recently developed 2 courses on Better understanding terrorism (BUT) and Text-to-Data Applications and Novel Data Sources. Both courses can be taught at the undergraduate and graduate levels, for students with or without a background in economics and econometrics. For example, I have taught BUT to students from PolSci, International Relations, Psychology, Anthropology, History, Communication Studies, and Philosophy.

Since July 2015, I have been working at the University of Western Australia in Perth. I am also a Research Fellow at the IZA (Bonn, link here), a Research Affiliate at the CESifo (Munich, link here), and a Fellow at the Centre for Business Data Analytics at UWA. From 2025-2027, I will be spending ~3 months/year as a Humboldt Research Fellow at the University of Freiburg.

If you want to reach out, please send an email to [email protected] -- I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you for visiting.
